Sareak (Nets)

Synopsis

Fishing out at sea is a job done mostly by men, but in the port, its the women who dedicate themselves to repairing the nets, probably the most important tool of this profession. However, despite having carried out this job for centuries, it was not until 2012 that the professionalism of these women had been recognized in the Basque Country.

Inspiration is taken from this ages-old tradition that is now in danger of extinction. The physicality of the work of these women (lacing nets) is the starting point: a precise and repetitive job in a static position for long periods. We are also motivated by the symbolism of this job and what it evokes to us, provoking our imagination to try to understand the life of these women in those great pierced blankets: the nets.

In SAREAK, the strength of the five women drives us to the fishing ports via intimate moments and humour, or from a poetic and ironic point of view
